About Coe College |
Coe College was my chosen host college, my first foray into American life, and would become my home from home for the year. |
Furthermore, we believe that it is important for a liberal arts education to cultivate in students a desire to understand, a capacity for tolerance, and an ability to appreciate the ethnic and cultural diversity that make up humankind. It is the mission of the College to develop in students these abilities and attitudes, and in so doing to provide them an education that directs them toward a meaningful and successful life.
Thus concludes the Mission Statement of Coe College, and it was these words which caught my eye during college research for Study USA. I was drawn to the college which offered to promote diversity and inclusiveness, which actively sought to educate its students to understand that diversity is to celebrated and not feared. Considering the historical record of sectarianism, political violence and community strife which occurred in Northern Ireland, I was intrigued by a college with an ethos that would be the opposite of what I had known in my own childhood.
I was warmly welcomed and accepted into the college right from the beginning, by both staff and my fellow students alike. New students and hosted students are taught that from the moment they are introduced to their new campus, they are 'kohawks' and that 'kohawks fly together'. A more thriving and close community I cannot imagine. I am proud and honoured to be able to say I lived and was educated there.
Coe College is a private, selective and nationally recognised co-educational liberal arts college in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Since 1851, it has been providing a superior educational experience, both in and out of the classroom. There are approximately 1,400 students attending Coe: a diverse population representing around 33 American states and over 15 fifteen countries. At Coe, I discovered the exciting experience of a liberal arts education. It does not 'train' the student for a specific career pathway, nor does it focus on one area of study. It instead prepares the student for their future career by providing an invaluable set of employability skills, including the ability to conduct independent thinking and research, effective communication and the capacity for life-long learning. I found it intriguing to discover how it demonstrates that all fields of education are inter-related, and have practical relevance.
A Short History of how Coe College to be:
The college was founded in 1851 by the Rev. Williston Jones; Cedar Rapids' first resident minister opened his home to a group of young men with the aim of educating them for the ministry to serve churches in the Midwest. Two years later, whilst Jones was canvassing churches for money to send three of his students to Eastern seminaries, a farmer named Daniel Coe stepped forward with a pledge of $1,500 and the suggestion for Jones to start his own college in Cedar Rapids.
Coe Legend says this $1,500 pledge of Coe's was brought from New York, having been sewed into the petticoat of a visiting lady. Coe gave this gift with one requirement: that the proposed college should be 'available for the education of females as well as males.' Thus Coe was coeducational from its inception.
