employability skills gained |
The benefits of studying abroad are numerous, and I know all will stand me in good stead for the future. |
Study USA provided me with the opportunity to develop both personally and professionally. By studying abroad for the year, I enhanced my knowledge base, levels of understanding and existing skills, whilst gaining new skills.
The 'Study USA' programme actively promotes the enhancement of key employability skills and career development for the participating students. In a competitive graduate market, students must undertake more activities and undergo more experiences than before in an effort to stand out from the (bustling) crowd. Vital skills can be gained and enhanced at university, but even more so whilst studying abroad at a different country, immersed in a new culture and surrounded with new people and friendships. Such skills include public speaking, confidence in sharing your opinion, research and the ability to form persuasive arguments - all key skills for a legal career.
Through studying Business modules, engaging in volunteering and community work, being involved in student organisations and working as a legal intern, I feel I have been able to develop both personally and professionally. Study USA was an unparalleled opportunity to challenge myself and to complete tasks and assignments to the best of my ability.
I was encouraged to enhance skills such as interpersonal, communication and teamwork, key skills for a professional career. The following skills and abilities were also in active use:
I am reading for a Law degree and although I had not studied business as a distinct entity prior to commencing my studies at Coe, I had always been aware of the instrumental role Law plays in corporate governance. As I am fascinated with the intricate details of commercial law and its influence in daily life, I felt that studying business and finance would enable me to witness the law in practical application which would be beneficial throughout my studies. In addition, considering the current socio-economic climate it is vital to understanding the world of finance; thus I was able to study business and gain a practical knowledge on its importance in a world of shrinking borders. This is vital understanding essential in the political sphere, which shapes public and constitutional law.
My study of two US legal-focused modules and my internship in a local law firm have enabled me to always consider different legal jurisdictions, and understand the conflict of the rule of domestic law in a globalised world. This is essential to me as I aspire to work in public/constitutional law, meaning not only must I be aware of NI and UK law, but EU law also.
