A lesson in culture shock.
The language barrier is real, my friends. You would think that as I was going to be living in America, the country which predominantly speaks English and has ties with the UK/Ireland, I would be able to settle in no problem. I can safely assure you that this was not the case. Cultural differences exist, and the initial burst of culture shock certainly did hit me. At the time, I felt rather daunted by several areas in particular and I can remember feeling frustrated and wearily wondering when I would finally just 'get' everything. Thankfully, I did manage to overcome the differences - with the ensuring hilarity, quite naturally. Essentially, I was a Don Rumsfeld: there were known knowns and unknown knowns in terms of cultural differences, things I knew to expect. There were also unknown unknowns - the surprises along the way.
