The End...For now? |
Time changes everyone. Travelling enriches the soul. Memories are not to be forgotten. It's not over until life says so. |
once a kohawk, always a kohawk.
As my Padlet account demonstrates, the year was a whirlwind of fun, laughter, good times and challenging times, challenges and successes, friends and adventures - and I would not have changed a moment of it.
So saying that, shout-outs to the following:
The Atlantic, Des Moines Register, The Gazette, The Hill, National Journal, Newsweek, The New Republic, The New Yorker, The New York Times, Politico/Politico Europe, Time Magazine, USA Today, Washington Examiner, The Washington Post - the wonderful American newspapers and websites keeping informed about US news, politics and current affairs.
BBC News Online, The Belfast Telegraph, The Guardian, The Indy, Irish Examiner, The Irish Independent, The Irish Times, New Statesman, The Telegraph, The Times - these lovely lot allowed me to remain on top of everything occurring back home.
Chambers Student, Law Careers.net, Lawyer 2B, Legal Cheek, Lexology and The Student Lawyer for keeping this wannabe lawyer up to scratch with legal news whilst abroad.
S/O to BuzzFeed for these photograph-essay articles which helped me battle homesickness/made me smile and remember home:
Hey, Coe and America: don't you forget about me. I'll never forget you. One day, it will be óró, sé do bheatha abhaile. Until then, thanks for the memories.
So saying that, shout-outs to the following:
- Amazon Prime and Netflix - the guilty pleasures and binge-watching necessities of every student, whether we openly confess as such or not. I can confirm the oft-whispered complaint is true: US Netflix trumps ours, hands down. The Good Wife, Prison Break, The West Wing and Constantine were marathon-watching rewards.
- Starbucks' Iced Coffee range: truly the modern day ambrosia.
- Blueberry bagels from the local coffee shop.
- The staff and students who worked in the post office/mail room of Coe, for heroically advising me on postage, being on such good terms with me that they would text me whenever I received something and be so kind as to keep the room open late so I could nip in and grab what had arrived.
- My numerous Professors, who never complained about having to read my papers etc. when written in 'British' English and from whom I learnt so much.
- The wonderful tech fellas in the library, for saving my laptop from a US-government style shutdown and insisted on feeding me biscuits, making me coffee and inviting me to sit down and chat as they did so.
- The cafeteria staff, always so welcoming, who began to tip me off with what I could eat when learning I was a vegetarian and so rather confined in my options.
- The amazing crew at Viner Law, for being so welcoming and allowing me to stake a proprietary interest in a corner of the office for months. I will miss your friendliness, humour and dedication.
- My family, for being so supportive and encouraging. I could not have completed the year without your love, kindness and little messages.
- My friends back home, for your messages and keeping me up to date on all the gossip!
- My roomies, for always being a source of support, encouragement and fun. Thank you for your welcome and acceptance of a chatty and zany European.
- My sorority sisters, for introducing me to Greek Life and the love and care that comes with it.
- My fellow Europeans and Internationals, as we learnt more about America together and looked out for each other.
- Ma belle Yassou for being my partner in crime; elle est <<Madame le Chat>> aussi.

the following audio clip and video should demonstrate my willingness to engage in self-deprecation as my nationality dictates.
A few friends challenged me to complete the BuzzFeed Accent Challenge, seeing as I was the only student in possession of an Irish accent, it was apparently an opportunity they could not bear to go to waste. Enjoy.
One of my roomies challenged the rest of the room to compete the Ice Bucket Challenge. Mercifully, it was during the summer so we all dried out quickly enough.
